Michiana Weddings (South Bend Weddings parent site) has been contacted by a national news program asking us if we know any of the brides or families that have been caught up in the Brides A La Mode Closing. If you are willing to share your story, please contact us at email@example.com and we will put you in contact with the news producer.
Earlier this evening (Feb 21) the following was posted to the the Bride’s A La Mode facebook page by Kelsey Jones one of the brides caught up in the BAM closing mess.
BRIDES ALA MODE UPDATE – I was actually in the store today (drove by &there were 3 ladies (1 of which was the previous manager of Andrea’s Bridal) standing in the store who let me in to talk about my situation). they told me they are working separate from Kathy & have decided on their own to come in and try to do “damage control” and figure things out for those of us who have things on order. While I was in the store they set up a yahoo email for us to get in touch with them. The email that was set up is firstname.lastname@example.org (at least that is what was given to me). They ask that everyone be kind since they aren’t even sure where to begin because things are such a mess. I agreed to send this to those who had posted on the fb page & they would like everyone to email them with their situation – they need to figure out who has dresses in the store (since the records aren’t correct) & what is owed, who has dresses actually on order & which designers to contact, what items were never actually orderd, and what needs to be refunded (although this didn’t sound promising).
We have sent an email to this address ourselves, to get more information and will let you know what we find out.
The South Bend Tribune’s Heidi Prescott written Market Basket has a brief blurb in it this morning about their attempts to contact Kathy Strukel, owner of Brides A La Mode the wedding gown shop that closed it’s doors on January 31.
The locally owned bridal store Brides a la Mode had been scheduled to reopen last week at 1229 E. University Drive, Mishawaka. We did not hear back from the owner about a possible reopening, nor did we receive new information about the status of the business after requesting it from the City Plaza shopping center owner. Kathy Strukel previously said she planned to close temporarily to downsize. …
And that is it. In our opinion the fact that the owner is refusing to communicate with even the South Bend Tribune, the store can be written off as permanently closed. We feel for all of the brides, family and friends caught up in this mess, but if you have been holding out hope that the doors would suddenly reopen, it’s time to let it go and find a wedding dress elsewhere.
We recommend for the South Bend bride to check out Bernardo’s for the Bride, which is across from Farmers Market. They are having a massive gown sale. There is also Gretas on Lincolnway near the Miami intersection.
As you can see in the image to the left, the BAM sign still says closed for inventory & remodeling but “reopening 2.15? and “open Saturdays 11-1? has been added. We don’t know if this is “good news” or a delaying tactic by the owner. A look through the windows revealed again, that absolutely nothing has changed about the appearance of the building since the doors were first closed, no remodeling has been done for nearly the two weeks since the closing. No appearance of people doing inventory.
We have seen a few brides post thinking that “Open Saturdays 11-1? means they will be open this coming Saturday, before the 2/15 “reopening”. We aren’t convinced that it means that. But we will be checking to see if the doors are unlocked on this coming Saturday and let you know.
In our opinion, we wouldn’t recommend doing business with this gown shop, if it does reopen. Whatever the real reason is for this store closing, the wedding gown is too important to South Bend brides, to risk their money on at a poorly managed store. There are several reputable wedding gown shops with longer stable histories in the Michiana area to shop: Bernardo’s for the Bride, Greta’s both of which are in South Bend, Stephenson’s in Elkhart and Treats in Plymouth.
Do you have a wedding gown on order or awaiting alterations at Brides a La Mode? Then you will probably be interested in this, Heidi Prescott of the South Bend Tribune posted this to the Bride’s a La Mode Facebook page this morning:
Heidi Prescott Please contact me via email today if you have a dress at this store. Tell me what you have heard and the concerns you have. This sounds like a huge stress on all of you. I’m trying to get to the bottom of it. Thanks! email@example.com (Market Basket, SBT)
Brides a la Mode near Grape road in Granger, closes “temporarily”? WNDU this evening broke the news that Brides a la Mode has a closed for inventory and remodeling sing on it’s front door. A statement from the owner says that they will reopen on 2-15-11. The owner also scheduled a meeting with WNDU but failed to show. A couple of brides were also interviewed.0
Whatever this is it is being handled poorly. Inventories do not take 2 weeks in a small store like this to be completed. Stores like this do not close to “remodel”. This is one of the busiest times of years for gown shops as many brides became engaged over the holidays and have been checking out fashions at winter bridal shows. The gown is one of the first things most brides start to look for once engaged. Stores remain open during remodels to keep making money and services customers and have the remodel done during off hours. And if they really care about their customers they keep answering the phone and don’t let it go long enough that the local news station picks up the story. That is another question, just how long has the store been closed and brides have been worried till WNDU picked up the story. It just doesn’t happen in a day.
The WNDU statement said that Bride’s a la Mode would reopen on 2-15-11 however tonight on their Facebook page was posted this:
Brides a la mode is closed for an inventory and some remodeling. More news will be available on February 15. All orders will arrive on schedule and alterations are still available.
“More News will be available” is NOT saying they will reopen on that date!
Our recommendation: If your wedding is still a while off, hold tight till the 15th. Don’t panic. If your wedding could be impacted by this closure because it is coming up soon, I would call the store and post to their facebook page to be contacted if they haven’t done so. If after a day or two you do not hear back, contact WNDU and let them know you are not getting through.
In our opinion we would recommend anyone relying on Brides a la Mode at this point to start formulating an alternative plan. Two plus weeks of closure for inventory or even remodeling is not a trust inspiring reason to close a shop.
